As a Professional Engineering Institution, we have a responsibility to adapt as engineering disciplines and roles evolve. Our IPlantE professional sector has been considering whether a change of name would better reflect current roles, in the maintenance and operation of fixed and mobile machine assets.

As a result, and following a recent survey of IPlantE members and much deliberation and consultation, the IPlantE committee made the decision to rename and lead our recently formed sector for operations engineers, to become the Operations Professional Sector incorporating IPlantE.

This move is designed to give a broader reach, increase resources and provide opportunities to develop new accreditation services and membership activities such as:

  • Membership offers for operational engineers within railway construction and maintenance, and the armed forces
  • A national maintenance standard
  • A clear progression route into the Operations Sector for students and apprentices upon completion of their qualification
  • A closer association with the digital and print publication Operations Engineer

The new Operations sector will build on the rich heritage of IPlantE and continue to provide support and development opportunities. This change will come into effect at the AGM on 14 July 2020.

Existing members can choose to retain their current IPlantE post nominals throughout the next 10 years.

Many thanks to everyone who took the time to share their thoughts and help us to take this important step towards securing our future.

If you have any queries or concerns about the above then please don't hesitate to get in touch with me.
