The Commercial Vehicle Show 2025, held at Birmingham’s NEC, gave the Institute of Road Transport Engineers (IRTE) the ideal stage to connect with engineers, technicians, and operators from across the industry. Throughout the event, The IRTE stand was busy with visitors stopping by to learn more about new developments, ask questions about career support, and find out how IRTE is helping to raise standards in vehicle maintenance.

Industry-Wide Support and Future Outlook

The MPRS has received strong backing from key industry bodies, and the record-breaking number of visitors to the IRTE stand during its launch clearly shows the sector’s enthusiasm for this much-needed initiative.

Amy Carter, head of product at Daimler Truck UK, commented: “As an OEM, Daimler Truck UK has welcomed being involved in the development of the MPRS as we believe it is important for the commercial vehicle industry to be setting new standards. It has needed a consistent, nationwide rating scheme for a long time.”

“We believe the MPRS will help raise the bar in aftersales and, in the longer term, we hope customers start asking workshops for their MPRS ratings and that dealers start promoting their own scores. Daimler Truck takes customer service and compliance very seriously and although we already assess the standards of our own dealer network regularly, the MPRS now provides a useful independent benchmark to prove that when a customer sends their fleet into our workshops, they’re being looked after by the highest standards,” continued Amy.

The scheme's launch was further highlighted during a seminar titled "Advancing Compliance and Standards in Commercial Vehicle Maintenance" at the CV Show. Speakers included Nick Elliott (Chairman of IRTE), Kevin Rooney (Traffic Commissioner for the West of England), Andrew Donald (DVSA), and James Reed (Daimler Truck UK), who discussed how the MPRS will reshape industry standards.

IRTE's Commitment to Career Development

Beyond the successful launch of the MPRS, the IRTE stand at the Commercial Vehicle Show 2025 was a centre for career development and professional growth.Throughout the three-day event, the IRTE’s team spoke with hundreds of visitors from diverse backgrounds, ranging from apprentices and newly qualified technicians to experienced workshop managers and fleet engineers, about how the organisation can support them at every stage of their career.

One of the key initiatives on display was the IRTE’s mentoring platform, designed to connect engineers and technicians with experienced professionals for personalised guidance and support. The platform enables users to set goals, track progress, and receive one-to-one mentoring, helping individuals build confidence, expand their knowledge, and take the next step in their careers.

Visitors also had the opportunity to explore IRTE’s wide range of career development resources, including advice on gaining Engineering Council registration as an Engineering Technician (EngTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng), or Chartered Engineer (CEng). IRTE’s team offered practical insights into Continuing Professional Development (CPD) a requirement for maintaining professional registration, and shared tools to help individuals build a tailored career pathway, whether they work in workshops, fleet management, or transport operations.

By combining technical standards with professional support, IRTE continues to play a vital role in strengthening the commercial vehicle sector’s workforce. The Commercial Vehicle Show offered a valuable opportunity to highlight this work and ensure that more engineers are equipped not just to meet today’s demands, but to lead the industry into the future.

Driving Standards Forward

The Commercial Vehicle Show 2025 marked a significant milestone for IRTE and the broader commercial vehicle industry.

The successful launch of the MPRS, coupled with IRTE's ongoing commitment to professional development, underscores a collective effort to enhance maintenance standards and support the growth of skilled professionals in the sector.
