Gold trophy cup with gold glitter stars

The Safety and Sustainability awards gives members the opportunity to nominate in nine separate categories that celebrate successes in safety and sustainability across the road transport, plant, environmental and engineer surveying sectors.

Bruce McGill, Society Chief Executive, said: “Over the past year we have heard of many outstanding achievements from members of the Society in all of our professional sectors. Now, we get the chance to recognise those accomplishments, of which there are many, and celebrate the expertise, endeavour and talent of Society members.”

The headline sponsor of the event will be leading commercial vehicle manufacturer DAF, which will also sponsor the popular Sir Moir Lockhead safety award open to candidates in the areas of safety initiatives or innovation, safety invention or for safety. Their sponsorship of the event reflects their commitment to improving safety and making engineering sustainable. DAF is prepared for the zero-carbon future of the industry with their zero-emission LF Electric, now in production at Leyland and on sale alongside the CF Electric. DAF is looking to bring in talented technicians as part of its commitment to the future of engineering “We are always looking to recruit keen and committed technicians,” said Suzanne Moore, DAF Training Manager at DAF Trucks. “A workshop role in the DAF Dealer network is a sound career choice, with abundant opportunities to develop a broader technical skillset to mirror future technological developments”.

Three new awards will be handed out in 2021 to complement our existing categories. Apprentice of the Year is open to promising and talented rising stars of the industry who strive for knowledge and are willing to dedicate time and energy to learning. Those who inspire others to consider apprenticeships or who act as an ambassador for the engineering profession could win this award. Leading transport operator in the UK and North America, First Bus, will sponsor the award. First Bus, one of FirstGroup’s five divisions, is one of Britain’s largest bus operators. First Bus apprenticeships are an integral part its business with a wide range of programmes on offer covering everything from Engineering to Business and Leadership Apprenticeships.

Open to companies which invest in people development and promoting a culture of inclusion, the Employer of the Year award is also new for 2021. A company that pays for its employees’ membership or registration, offers irtec as a career progression scheme or offers a compelling apprenticeship programme, should be nominated for this award. The company must have in place policies that focus on increasing diversity amongst employees - a sustainable way of managing their workforce and increasing talent pool.

Engineer Surveyor of the Year will be sponsored by HSB Engineering Insurance, a leading specialist provider of engineering and construction insurance, inspection services and engineering-based risk management. With a nationwide network, it performs inspections on over 1.5 million items of plant and equipment a year throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland.

Plant Engineer of the Year will be sponsored by MCP, which provides maintenance, reliability and asset management consulting and management and technical skills training solutions to help continuously assess, improve and deliver world-class performance.

Road Transport Engineer of the Year will be sponsored by FCL, market leaders which produces some of the most technologically advanced filters on the market. This year the category is open to candidates working in the heavy goods vehicle or bus & coach industry. Multi-skilled technicians in electrical, mechanical, diagnostics & inspection, which sets them apart as experts, will be recognised in this category.

Added to the list will be an award for our new sector, Environmental Engineer of the Year. Candidates should embrace the core pillars of sustainability through planning, design, production, delivery, and the long-term environmental benefits gained through use, introduction of policies or managerial practices. Maintaining and improving environmental performance is key, as is complying with environmental regulations and recommendations. This award is sponsored by Atlas Copco, a global manufacturer of industrial tools and equipment, offering compressed air and vacuum solutions that help ensure their customers’ reliable operations, optimize their productivity, lower their CO2-emissions, and help them achieve their own sustainability ambitions.

The deadline for entries is 20 August.
