This new competition celebrates the UK’s top HGV engineers and technicians. Building upon the success of the Bus and Coach Skills Challenge, it's time for HGVs to take the spotlight. Join us in recognising skill, precision, and the people keeping Britain moving.
The Institute of Road Transport Engineers (IRTE), have officially launched the first-ever HGV Skills Challenge, in collaboration with leading manufacturer DAF Trucks. Building on the success of the long-established Bus and Coach Skills Challenge, this new competition is set to recognise and celebrate the nation’s most talented heavy goods vehicle (HGV) technicians.
Championing Technical Excellence in the HGV Sector
Scheduled to take place on 1–2 October 2025 at the DAF Apprentice Academy in Nottingham, the IRTE HGV Skills Challenge aims to test the practical skills and theoretical knowledge of qualified HGV engineers. Technicians from across the UK are invited to put their expertise to the test through a series of hands-on challenges, including diagnostics, electrical systems, and mechanical problem-solving.
This pioneering event reinforces SOE’s commitment to raising standards in commercial vehicle maintenance and promoting professional development across the road transport engineering industry.
A Platform for Growth, Recognition, and Recruitment
The competition offers more than just a chance to win. It provides a unique platform for learning, career growth, and industry-wide recognition. By highlighting the expertise of HGV technicians, the challenge aims to attract new talent into the sector, close the skills gap, and celebrate the essential role engineers play in keeping Britain moving.
With backing from DAF Trucks, one of the UK’s most respected HGV manufacturers, the event also underscores the strong partnership between industry and professional bodies in supporting technical excellence.
Who Can Take Part?
The IRTE HGV Skills Challenge is open to qualified HGV technicians employed in the UK, as well as advanced apprentices with hands-on workshop experience. Individuals and employers are encouraged to enter to showcase their team’s capabilities on a national stage.
