After years of dedicated service, Sgt. Snook is set to retire at the end of July 2025. In response, the Irte Northern Centre Committee, prompted by committee member Neil Mitchell, took the opportunity to formally acknowledge his impact on commercial vehicle safety in Lancashire.

A career dedicated to safer roads

Sgt. Snook has played a pivotal role in revitalising the Lancashire CVU, spearheading efforts to rebuild a skilled team of officers focused on ensuring compliance within the heavy goods vehicle (HGV) sector. Under his leadership, the unit has become a high-profile presence across the county, conducting regular roadside checks to improve vehicle safety and enforce transport regulations.

Equipped with a dedicated mobile office, the team operates across key locations, including motorway service areas, port entry points, and the DVSA check site at Bamber Bridge near Preston. This multi-agency approach—especially in partnership with DVSA examiners has proven critical in upholding roadworthiness standards in the North West.

Expertise and excellence

The CVU officers trained under Sgt. Snook are proficient in a wide range of enforcement areas, including:

  • Vehicle inspection
  • Tachograph compliance
  • Load security
  • Vehicle weighing
  • Hazardous materials (Hazchem) handling
  • Special Types General Order (STGO) movement operations

Sgt. Snook himself is recognised as an expert in STGO operations and compliance matters, contributing both practical knowledge and strategic insight that have shaped the effectiveness of the unit.

A moment of recognition

On Monday, 28th of July 2025, Irte Northern Centre committee member and Irte Professional Sector Council representative Chris Grime visited the DVSA site at Bamber Bridge to personally acknowledge Sgt. Snook's contributions.

During a lunch break at the site, Chris addressed the gathered officers and DVSA personnel, highlighting Sgt. Snook's unwavering dedication and the broader efforts of the CVU. On behalf of the Irte Northern Centre, he presented Sgt. Snook with a certificate of appreciation and a commemorative centre shield.

A lasting legacy

The Irte Northern Centre commends Sgt. Peter Snook for his outstanding service and leadership. His legacy will continue to influence road safety enforcement across Lancashire, and his work has set a high standard for future officers committed to maintaining compliance and protecting the public.
