HJS Emission Technology is helping operators upgrade to the Euro VI standard with its retrofit SCRT exhaust technology.

It combines a diesel particulate filter with a SCR system to reduce NOx and help operators comply with regulations of ULEZ and Clean Air Zones (CAZ).

Mark Cooper, Managing Director at HJS, said: “Our technology allows operators of buses, coaches, trucks, vans and taxis to upgrade emissions to Euro VI standards relatively inexpensively and in a short space of time.

“As the UK has introduced the ULEZ in London and various CAZ are imminent throughout the UK, the HJS SCRT will allow operators to use these vehicles within this zone indefinitely. It is also extremely beneficial for air quality in these areas, as retrofitting is a solution to solve a current problem, rather than the costly and slow alternative that is new vehicle procurement,” added Mark.

HJS recently announced a partnership with Grayson Thermal Systems for a major project to retrofit 637 buses in the West Midlands. The retrofitting of National Express West Midlands (NXWM) buses is part of a compliance exercise that will see 80% of its fleet conform by January 2020 and 100% by April 2021. A central Birmingham CAZ is set to launch in July 2020 that will prohibit the use of buses and coaches older than Euro VI.

“There are a good few years of “on road” installations remaining across the UK fleet, together with changing policies and requirements for the offroad and construction sectors.

“We are expecting approximately 4,000 taxis to be retrofitted - scheduled as a two-year project - followed by thousands of vans. We are already looking at the rail retrofit and electrification market beyond this,” said Mark.
