Skills Challenge 2018 off to a flying start

5th Jun 2018

The IRTE Skills Challenge 2018 kicked-off with teams from Abellio, Lothian Buses and Tower Transit entering the competition arena at the S&B Automotive Academy in Bristol.

The competition is set for an action-packed five days as a record 32 teams entered from all over the country, joined this year by two from overseas, and two Master Technicians.

Michael Taylor, Lothian Buses Workshop Controller said: “For us, it’s a great way of gauging our ability as a team. We are recognised as the best bus operator in Scotland, so to come down here and show our level of workmanship is very pleasing. It gives us a good idea of how to plan future training schemes, too, and for the team, to understand that hard work pays off.”

Peter Mcleod, Mechanical Technician and soon to be a supervisor with Lothian Buses, was confident in his performance in the competition and said he was happy to be involved.

Tower Transit Mark Herbert Head of Engineering said: “It’s always a good day out at the Skills Challenge. It’s an excellent metric to see what our team know; to understand if there are any skills gaps, how they can be filled, and to assess if our team are getting what they need.”

Martin Dixon, Service Manager at Abellio London, said: “We’ve always come here with the intention of doing our best. If we can pick up any new approaches to the way we operate then that’s a bonus. Some of my team have put themselves out there and attempted certain tasks that might not be their speciality.”

On day two, we welcome teams from First Bus UK, Go Ahead London and Arriva London.
