Transport Scotland agrees £930m roads deal

31st Aug 2018

Transport Scotland has invited bids for two roads maintenance contracts worth over £930m for upgrade work on the south east and south west of the country.

The government body has published prior information notices (PINs) to the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) on August 23, as part of the first tranche of regional deals that will cover the South of the country. The two Northern regions, expected to be issued to the market by 2020, will make up tranche 2.

Transport Scotland are optimistic that the works - integrated network management, winter and emergency maintenance, renewal and improvement, and routine works – will improve reliability, while acknowledging the need to meet environmental and sustainability targets.
Michael Matheson, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure and Connectivity, said: “This latest generation of our operating company contracts will bring an improved level of service across 3,500 kilometres of trunk road.

“The two contracts will run for a minimum eight years, directly supporting around 650 operational and professional jobs in Scotland. They will also contribute significantly to the economy through the wider supply chain, with local firms benefiting on a regular basis,” said Michael.
The date for the publication of contract notices is estimated to be September 24 this year, with the contracts expected to be awarded by January 2020.

“I am confident these contracts will continue to deliver both a high quality and value for money trunk road maintenance service,” concluded Michael.
