Discount for cleaner Euro-6 HGVs comes into force

7th Mar 2019

Haulage firms operating Euro-6 vehicles are now eligible for a 10% discount on the HGV road user levy.

The levy reduction became active on February 1 following an amendment to legislation as part of the 2019 Finance Bill.

The government said that the newest trucks generate 80% fewer NOx emissions than older models, and will classify for a 10% discount, whereas Euro-5 class vehicles or older will be required to pay 20% more.
The levy applies to lorries over 12 tonnes in weight and was introduced in 2014 to fund repairs to the road network.

Although seen as a positive step in tackling air pollution, many fleet operators are struggling to adapt to new emission controls without the necessary retrofit measures in place.
