Supporting industry

irtec was developed as a collaboration between the IRTE (Institute of Road Transport Engineers) a professional sector of the SOE (Society of Operations Engineers) and many stakeholders in industry.

In 2010 IRTE entered into a joint arrangement with IMI (Institute of the Motor Industry) and IMI Awards Ltd, the leading awarding body for the retail motor industry, to further strengthen irtec’s aims to improve industry competence and standards. IMI Awards Ltd now manages the quality assurance process for irtec, including the approval of new irtec testing centres, monitoring of the assessments and assessors.

SOE and IMI Awards Ltd work together, in consultation with industry, on future irtec developments and initiatives, to ensure that irtec reflects the changing needs of employers.

Many companies have already joined irtec in its commitment to safety in the industry and continue to build on the success irtec has already achieved.

Supporting engineers

Malcolm Mobsby, irtec Licence Holder

"Mechanics tend to get forgotten in companies but having attended and passed the course at the age of 60, I was elated. After all these years, I feel I am now someone and my company now know the calibre of the people they employ. I think you have a scheme in operation that is running spot on, well organised and very professional in its dealing with candidates."

Hedley Fryatt, irtec Licence Holder

"The irtec Licensing Scheme has made me more aware of what is occurring within the workshop environment."

Beverley Bell, Senior Traffic Commissioner for Great Britain

“Through on-going certification, demonstrating current technology and legislation requirements irtec ensures that technicians are independently assessed against industry standards. Their subsequent accreditation through the irtec scheme will not only enhance the reputation of the commercial vehicle industry and give aspiring technicians a recognised career path, but will also actively improve standards of vehicle maintenance and consequently road safety.”

Alastair Peoples, VOSA Chief Executive

“It is essential operators recognise the need for a professional approach to vehicle maintenance, and irtec provides this through the periodic assessment of technicians’ competence. Reflecting technical and legislative changes, irtec is one of the building blocks required to achieve total performance and compliance.”
