Two great topics will be covered:

Topic 1: Typical accidents on escalators

Speaker: EurIng David. A. Cooper from LECS (UK) LTD
BSc (Hons), MSc, MPhil, CEng, FIET, FCIBSE, FCGLI, FRSA, FCABE, MSOE, MBES

This talk will cover escalators, moving walkways and typical accidents, foreseeable risks and the importance of a periodic thorough examination in preventing such risks. It will also include accidents caught on CCTV, an overview of the requirements in the SAFED EMW document and the history of documents pre the EMW document.

Finally, the presentation will cover Dave’s research and published works following a MSc dissertation into accidents involving shopping trolleys on escalators and his MPhil which looked into injuries to children as a result of falls over the sides of escalators.


Topic 2: The role of the competent person in the workplace

Speaker: Andy Kidd, Chief Engineer from British Engineering Services

This talk will cover the requirements for a competent person for examination, inspection and maintenance and outline the legislative requirement for inspection in the UK workplace. This will assist employers in compliance with legislation including:

- Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER)
- Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER)
- Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR)
- Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH)
- Electricity at Work Regulations (EAW)
