The logistics of refrigeration in transport and shipping

Members of the Centre attended an illuminating talk by Mr Justin Grace, UK managing director of Transicold, on the logistics of refrigeration in the transport and shipping industry.

Mr Grace began by briefly introducing himself and the company and its activities across the world. He then went on to give a fascinating and detailed talk on the logistics of refrigeration in the transport and shipping industry. It was most illuminating to discover how dependant we all are on refrigeration systems and containerisation. Indeed, it was revealed that just about all fresh produce is transported from overseas via refrigerated containers, that different produce requires different temperatures, and that reliability of systems both at sea and on the road are critical.

The speaker also referred to refrigerated trucks and vans which are used for more local deliveries and the power supplies for these when the vehicle is idle. It was further revealed that noise abatement was a particular issue with diesel powered refrigeration when vehicles are to deliver in cities and built-up areas in the early mornings or late at night.

Mr Grace concluded by referring to the challenges ahead with changing legislation on the horizon requiring the use of different refrigerant gasses, these new gasses should be less harmful to the environment.

The Chairman thanked Mr Grace for his fascinating talk.
