Chartered Engineers

Chartered Engineers (CEng) are characterised by their ability to develop appropriate solutions to engineering problems using new or existing technologies, through innovation, creativity and change.

They might develop and apply new technologies, promote advanced designs and design methods, introduce new and more efficient production techniques, marketing and construction concepts, pioneer new engineering services and management methods.

Chartered Engineers are variously engaged in technical and commercial leadership and possess interpersonal skills.

Qualifications required

An accredited Bachelors degree with honours in engineering or technology, and either an appropriate Masters degree accredited or approved by a professional engineering institution, or appropriate further learning to Masters level or an accredited integrated MEng degree. If you do not hold these qualifications, more information can be found on the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence on the Engineering Council website.

If you have non accredited or non-UK qualifications then please visit the Engineering Council FAQ section.

Alternative CEng registration routes

Formal education is the usual, but not the only, way of demonstrating the underpinning knowledge and understanding for professional competence and the following qualifications signify what is required for registration.

Members who do not have the necessary qualifications for CEng and IEng registration can demonstrate the required knowledge and understanding in other ways, but you must be able to show clearly that you have achieved the same level as those with qualifications. These ways include:

  • Writing a technical report, based upon their experience, and demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of engineering principles
  • Taking Engineering Council examinations
  • Following an assessed career-based learning programme
  • Taking an academic programme specified by the institution to which they are applying.
