RFID speeds LU escalator maintenance

1st Jun 2009

The move follows two months of trials, using Warrington-based CoreRFID for the engineering and Confidex for its RFID tag expertise.

The system - which uses UHF Gen2 (ISO-18000-6C) technology for its ability to read tags on metal at a distance - is designed to improve LU’s ability to check its 30,000 escalator steps on some 200 escalators.

CoreRFID developed LU’s Step Tracking maintenance management system, which uses PDAs with RFID readers mounted on a cradle beside each escalator.

‘The tags are installed under the steps, attached with acrylic adhesive and, in spite of the very tough environment, not a single Tag detached over the trial,’ comments Richard Harrison, technical director of CoreRFID.
