“Having gained a BTEC Diploma through the Royal Navy apprenticeship programme, I spent a number of years operating a variety of engineering plant. Throughout a career spanning 22 years, a considerable period was spent on continuing professional development (CPD) both engineering and managerial based.

Towards the end of my naval career I undertook an HNC followed up by an HND in Plant Engineering at Blackburn College.

After leaving the RN I was offered a position as Engineering Project Manager at Portsmouth Aviation Ltd. My responsibilities involve the management of Collective Protection Systems for both sea and land environments and Mail Protection Systems for vulnerable mail.

I became an Incorporated Engineer as it provides the recognition that I can operate as a professional engineer and have attained a defined standard. It was important to me that this process was independent and adjudged by a governing body that represents the interests of engineering both in the UK and abroad. In addition my employer recognises the advantages of registration as it shows the customer that the Company has a level of capability within its workforce.

I believe CPD plays an important part in my effectiveness as an engineer. I have undertaken a variety of courses, both managerial and technical, with the aim of becoming a Chartered Engineer in the future.”
