Student of the year
11th Oct 2011
Hull & East Yorkshire
Engineer’s success: (l-r) Centre chair Mike Waudby, student of the year Jamie Stanley and Scania (GB) Ltd’s depot manager, and centre committee member, Colin Gawthorpe.
Over thirty members and guests attended the centre’s annual student of the year ceremony, which was combined with a presentation on from local police officer, PC Glen Dennis.
Centre chair, Mike Waudby, outlined in his introduction that this year it had been particularly difficult to choose the student of the year, as the standard of candidates was very high. However, through much deliberation, a panel agreed upon the winning engineers, who were awarded in front of friends, family and engineering colleagues by Mrs Boyce, in memory of her son, James Boyce, who won the student of the year award several years ago.
WINNERS:
Student of the Year:
Jamie Stanley, Scania (UK) Ltd, Priory Park, Hull.
Jamie has worked for Scania for some three years, and has attained an NVQ3 via Scania’s own training scheme.
James Boyce Memorial Trophy for Meritorious Achievement:
Tom Roberts, Rix Petroleum Ltd. Hull.
Tom has worked his way to an apprenticeship via Rix’s transport department over the past three years, and is continuing his studies, with a focus on electrical systems.
Following the ceremony, local casualty reduction officer PC Dennis delivered an insightful presentation on casualty reduction, drawing upon his particular interest in motor cycling. Sparking off a lively debate, the lecture was extremely well received, and illustrated with PC Dennis’ varied experience and knowledge.
