MAN gives season's final Suffolk lecture

11th Mar 2009
Suffolk

The evening started with a short presentation detailing the history of the PAXMAN Engines factory in Colchester, to the present day, and ownership by MAN Diesel. The firm overhauls huge engines that power ferries, ships and trains.

The large delegation split into four groups to tour the workshops. Engines from all over the world are overhauled at MAN Diesel’s Colchester plant and the firm aims to salvage at least 95% of all engines.

The workshops must overhaul some engines very quickly in order to meet customer requirements. For example, work for ship’s engines is under strict deadline, due to the high cost of ‘parking’ in dry docks.

The tour took much longer than planned as visitors had numerous questions regarding the scale and complexity of the repair of such powerful engines.

Finally, MAN Diesel highlighted their engine testing booths that test the performance of every overhauled engine prior to repainting and consequent return to customers.

The Suffolk Centre will have to work hard to improve on the quality of the past year’s lecture programme and sincerely thanks all the companies that have supported them.
