SAFed document on escalators and moving walks
12th Oct 2011
BES South Eastern
The meeting attracted another high attendance, with over sixty engineer surveyors and guests hearing from Vince Sharpe, standards engineer for Allianz Engineering, as well as the South Eastern region’s Hon Sec.
Sharpe’s presentation gave a detailed overview of the new SAFed document, The Safe Operation of Escalators & Moving Walks, which Sharpe was a part of the drafting committee for, representing inspection bodies.
This new document replaces the old HSE plant machinery guidance document, PM34 Safe Use of Escalators and PM45 Thorough Examination of Escalators & Passenger Conveyors, which have now been withdrawn.
The drafting committee included selected industry specialists, with contributors from SAFed, LEIA, BAA, London Underground, CIBSE, Facilities Management Consortia and Enforcing Authorities.
Accidents on escalators and moving walks can have serious consequences, therefore, safety of this class of plant is paramount.
In brief, the document is split into to two main sections. One section gives guidance to owners and other people who have control of escalators and moving walks; the second section gives guidance to persons carrying out thorough examinations on escalators and moving walks – thus making this a useful document for engineer surveyors.
This document is available to download free from www.safed.co.uk.
