Engineering Council (UK)

Incorporated Engineers (IEng)

Incorporated Engineers (IEng) are characterised by their ability to act as exponents of today's technology through creativity and innovation. To this end, they maintain and manage applications of current and developing technology, and may undertake engineering design, development, manufacture, construction and operation. Incorporated Engineers are variously engaged in technical and commercial management and possess effective interpersonal skills.

Qualifications Required

An accredited Bachelors degree in engineering or technology or a Higher National Diploma or Foundation Degree in engineering or technology, and appropriate further learning to degree level. If you do not hold these qualifications, more information can be found on the Engineering Council website [PDF].

Alternative Registration Routes

Formal education is the usual, but not the only, way of demonstrating the underpinning knowledge and understanding for professional competence and the following qualifications signify what is required for registration.

Members who do not have the necessary qualifications for CEng and IEng registration can demonstrate the required knowledge and understanding in other ways, but you must be able to show clearly that you have achieved the same level as those with qualifications. These ways include:
  • Writing a technical report, based upon their experience, and demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of engineering principles
  • Taking Engineering Council examinations
  • Following an assessed work-based learning programme
  • Taking an academic programme specified by the institution to which they are applying.
